Our Philosophy

Whose recommendations do we trust more than anyone else's?

Nope, not the "experts."

Nope, not the wisdom of the crowd.

We trust people like us, with tastes similar to our own.

It's on this idea that we built Common Tastes and all of its sister sites. We don't just show you what's been rated the highest, or people-who-like-X-also-like-Y. Our system hones in on your specific likes and dislikes to introduce you to new things you'll like.

A few years ago I was living in Europe and figured there'd never be a better (or cheaper!) time to learn about wine. Being an absolute beginner, I hit the Google to find a page where I could list a few wines I knew and liked, compare them against a database of other people's wine reviews, and find some new ones which were rated highly — not by experts or by the masses, but by people with tastes similar to my own. I couldn't find it.

I asked my pal Steve if he wanted to make that site with me and it quickly became clear that we shouldn't limit ourselves just to wine; why not beer? Tea? Video games? Today there are many sites in the Common Tastes Fleet, and we're adding more all the time!

Sean and I go way back. We've been technical collaborators and friends since before the turn of the millenium. We'd never worked together on something so substantial or important until one brisk autumn day in 2008. On that day, Common Tastes was born. Over the next few days, we hashed out a basic plan, and over the next several months, we drew up our initial design and implementation roadmaps.

What I love about Common Tastes is how it brings people together, not just to share their opinions, but to turn their opinions into cool and useful suggestions for just about anything. I've got some pretty diverse interests, ranging from classic video games to gluten-free cooking to Japanese tea. If our website can recommend new things for me, it'll work for just about anyone.
